Our Expectations Are High, So Are the Stakes: Vahagn Khachaturyan on Armenian-Azerbaijani Agreement

August 8 is considered a significant achievement in the history of newly independent Armenia, marking the preliminary signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington. It changes the entire landscape of the region, moving from a war and military logic to a mindset focused on peace, economic development, and prosperity. This was stated by President Vahagn Khachaturyan in his welcoming speech at the annual conference of heads of Armenian diplomatic missions held in Kapan.

“Today, we are living in a pivotal moment for our region. The long-term, determined, and patient policy of the Armenian government has finally led us to a point that opens the door to opportunities for security, stability, and a future for Armenia, the Armenian people, and our region. I consider August 8 a significant diplomatic achievement in the history of newly independent Armenia, changing the entire landscape of the region from a war and military logic to one of peace, economic development, and prosperity,” said President Khachaturyan.

“Our expectations are high, as the stakes are also high—our border security and the confidence of our people. While showing cautious optimism and consistently prioritizing Armenia's security and national interests, we must also remain open to constructive dialogue and regional cooperation. Sustainable peace will reveal enormous economic potential for Armenia. Opportunities may arise for initiatives in trade, energy, and infrastructure that could transform our region into a hub of cooperation,” President Vahagn Khachaturyan added.
