Russia Requests Emergency UN Security Council Meeting on Nord Stream Bombing

Russia has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the bombing of the 'Nord Stream' pipeline, scheduled for August 26, 2022. This was announced by Dmitry Polyanskiy, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, via Telegram.

"We will draw attention to the delays in the investigation by Germany and the lack of transparency for the Security Council," he stated.

On August 21, a 49-year-old Sergey Kuznetsov was arrested in Italy, accused of blowing up the 'Nord Stream' in September 2022. According to investigators, he was part of a group that had placed explosives near the Danish island of Bornholm. After being extradited to Germany, he faces up to 15 years in prison; however, Kuznetsov has denied his guilt in a Bologna court.

The explosions on the two Russian gas pipelines, 'Nord Stream' and 'Nord Stream 2', occurred on September 26, 2022. Gas flow through the first was halted at the time for repairs, while the second had not yet been commissioned. As a result, three of the four strings were damaged. The operator of 'Nord Stream' reported unprecedented destruction and refused to predict timelines for the pipelines' recovery.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the plan for the bombing of 'Nord Stream' was developed by senior Ukrainian officers under the direction of a senior general of the special forces and controlled by the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi. German investigators stated that a rental boat with forged documents was used through intermediaries to transport the explosive device.
