Araghchin and Lavrov Discuss Nuclear Issues and Tehran’s Cooperation with IAEA

The heads of the foreign ministries of Russia and Iran, Abbas Araghchin and Sergei Lavrov, have discussed nuclear issues and Tehran's cooperation with the IAEA, according to the Iranian foreign ministry.

“During the conversation, the parties exchanged thoughts on the development of the situation surrounding Iran's nuclear issues, particularly regarding the actions of the three European countries (Germany, Britain, and France) in light of the approaching expiration of the legal term of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (which endorsed the 2015 nuclear agreement),” the statement read.

The parties also assessed the prospects for nuclear negotiations and emphasized that the deadline for UN Security Council Resolution 2231 will expire on the scheduled date of October 18, 2025.

At the same time, the head of Iran's foreign ministry, while discussing the idea of extending the resolution by the “E3,” stressed that the decision on this matter will be made by the members of the UN Security Council.

As noted in the statement, the ministers also agreed to continue consultations at various levels.

It is worth mentioning that the “E3” (Britain, France, Germany) had previously sent a letter to the UN indicating that they were prepared to extend sanctions against Iran if Tehran did not agree to the nuclear deal by the end of August. Meanwhile, it was proposed to extend the application of certain provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear agreement set to expire on October 18, 2025, in exchange for Iran resuming negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear agreement.
