Trump Delays Promised Sanctions Against Russia
U.S. President Donald Trump has decided not to impose new sanctions against Russia and its trade partners following his meeting with Vladimir Putin. In light of recent events, he stated, "I don’t think we should be thinking about that now. Maybe in two or three weeks we’ll think about it, but we don’t need to think about it now." This was reported by Trump in an interview with Fox News.
According to him, the negotiations with the Russian president went very well. "It was a very warm meeting. I think we are very close to an agreement," the White House leader noted. He added that Putin not only supports the idea of peace in Ukraine but also wishes for it to happen.
Trump mentioned that the ceasefire and peaceful settlement now depend on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and advised Kyiv to reach an agreement with Moscow. Before the negotiations with Putin, Trump had stated that if the Russian president refuses to stop military operations in Ukraine, he would face very serious consequences. At the same time, the American leader indicated that if the talks are successful, a trilateral meeting with Zelensky may take place.
It is worth recalling that the U.S.-Russia summit took place in Anchorage, Alaska. The talks between Trump and Putin lasted for 2 hours and 45 minutes, although the Russian president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov announced that they could last for 6-7 hours.
