Garnik Danielyan on Water Quality
Citizens continuously express their complaints regarding the change in water quality and the recurring water supply cuts. This was stated by MP Garnik Danielyan on his Facebook page.
“Especially in several communities of the regions of Armenia, water may be supplied for merely one hour within a 24-hour period. Residents attempt to meet their domestic needs during that short time. Another issue is the deterioration of water quality. Although the ‘Veolia Water’ company ‘admits’ that due to insufficient water supply in the summer, drinking water is mixed with groundwater from deep artesian wells, claims that this does not affect the health of the population are, to put it mildly, not credible. I have received alerts from residents of several communities in the capital regarding gastrointestinal issues arising from drinking water. It turns out that in a country rich in water resources, we are facing problems with drinking water and irrigation. I have repeatedly emphasized that water has security significance, and the loss of around 70% of water is unacceptable. Thousands of hectares remain arid while our water resources reach neighboring countries. This is a consequence of the mismanagement of the water sector. For seven years they have failed to develop a strategy that would save our water resources. They talk about the conservation of dozens of abandoned wells, while they know about the inefficacy of such methods of conservation. It is no secret that ‘water theft’ is a common phenomenon in Armenia. Illegal water lines, against which there is no systematic struggle, also lead to significant water losses. Recently, unplanned electricity outages have also become frequent. It is interesting how the Electricity Network will justify the frequent outages under this government that has unlawfully usurped power and transformed it into an office of the ruling party. It is clear that this situation has also been created due to an enormous number of building permits, which has resulted in an unprecedented burden on the city’s infrastructure. I have requested written clarifications from the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia, asking what steps the commission is taking to rectify this situation that disrupts the normal lives of citizens,” wrote Danielyan.
