Fine for Crossing Streets at Undesignated Areas Doubled for Pedestrians
Amendments have been made to the Armenian Code of Administrative Offenses. From now on, pedestrians who violate the rules for crossing the roadway—specifically, those who cross streets at undesignated areas—will face stricter penalties.
Arman Chilingaryan, deputy chief of the patrol service, elaborated: “Previously, the administrative penalty for such a violation was set at five times the minimum wage, which is 5,000 drams. However, as of August 2, the fine has been increased to 10,000 drams.”
The basis for this legislative change is concerning statistics: in 2023 alone, there were 1,197 recorded cases of hit-and-runs, resulting in the deaths of 108 individuals. Although the number of hit-and-runs has slightly decreased in 2024, the death toll remains nearly the same, with 1,079 incidents and 107 fatalities. Most of these accidents occur due to pedestrians violating traffic rules, as noted in the Ministry of Internal Affairs' statement.
