Erdogan Sues Turkish Official

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has filed a lawsuit against the leader of the main opposition "Republican People's Party" (CHP), Ozgur Ozel, accusing him of defamation and seeking 1 million lira (approximately $24,500) in compensation for moral damages. This was reported by the Turkish leader's lawyer, Huseyin Aydin, according to TASS.

“Due to the inappropriate statements and unfounded accusations made by CHP President Ozgur Ozel on August 13, a lawsuit seeking 1 million Turkish lira in compensation for moral damages has been filed at the Ankara Civil Court of First Instance. Additionally, a complaint has been lodged with the Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office for the crime of insulting the president,” the lawyer wrote on social media platform X.

Earlier, during a rally held in Istanbul, Ozel had specifically accused Erdogan of orchestrating the arrest of opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in March of this year on corruption charges.

Erdogan has previously filed several lawsuits against the CHP leader. It is noteworthy that insulting the president is a criminal offense in Turkey.
