Zakharova Comments on Joint Declaration Signed During Pashinyan-Trump-Aliyev Meeting
The meeting of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the United States deserves a positive assessment; however, the involvement of players outside the region should not create additional difficulties, stated Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"We consistently support all efforts that contribute to achieving this important goal of regional security. In this regard, the meeting of the leaders of the South Caucasus republics with American mediation in Washington deserves a positive assessment. We hope that this step will contribute to the advancement of the peace agenda," Zakharova said in a commentary published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website.
She added that the best solution to the problems of the South Caucasus is to find and implement solutions developed by the countries of the region with the support of their neighbors: Russia, Iran, and Turkey.
"The involvement of players outside the region should help strengthen the peace agenda and not create additional difficulties and dividing lines. We would like to avoid the sad experience of the West's assistance in resolving conflicts in the Middle East," the diplomat noted.
Moscow will further analyze the statements from Washington regarding the unblocking of regional communications, Zakharova said.
"The trilateral agreements involving Russia, from which no party has withdrawn, remain relevant in this area. It is also important to consider the factor of Armenia's membership in the EAEU's unified customs territory, particularly concerning the organization of transit freight transport through the territory of the republic," the commentary stated.
