Putin Proposes 'Limited' Ceasefire Ahead of Trump Summit

Putin proposes a limited air and naval ceasefire ahead of the summit with Trump in Alaska. This is reported by The Economist.

“During negotiations, it is possible to achieve more impressive progress with broader agreements that define what the freezing of the conflict might ultimately look like. At the same time, there remains a significant distance between the positions of Ukraine, Russia, and America,” adds the British publication.

The publication outlines the chronology of events: on August 8, Trump's ultimatum expired, demanding Putin to cease military operations under the threat of severe sanctions. However, instead of yielding to pressure, an announcement was made about the Alaska summit. Zelensky's participation is not expected. The Economist considers this a diplomatic success for Moscow, as Putin managed to initiate direct negotiations with the U.S. president without halting the attacks on Ukraine.
