Palestine Requests Emergency UN Security Council Meeting
Palestine, along with several other countries, is requesting the immediate convening of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to halt what they consider to be Israel's extensive military operations in the Gaza Strip. This was announced to reporters by Riyad Mansour, Palestine's permanent observer at the UN.
Mansour stated that several countries are pushing for a meeting to be held on August 9. “We prefer to meet as soon as possible,” he said.
According to the Palestinian representative, the main objective is to “stop Israel from this extremely dangerous escalation.” He expressed hope that the international community will be able to “avoid such crazy, irresponsible, dangerous, malicious plans” that, he claims, are being devised by the Israeli leadership under Prime Minister Netanyahu.
