Syunik Patrols Discover Over 12 Kg of Drugs
The National Security Service reports that the Syunik patrols have discovered over 12 kilograms of smuggled drugs.
“In the early hours of July 27, while on duty along the Meghri-Agarak highway, the patrol officers noticed a suspicious Honda vehicle whose driver did not obey the 'stop' command. A chase ensued. The patrol managed to force the Honda to stop on a dirt road. During the chase, one of the passengers threw packages out of the vehicle window onto the road. After the forced stop, two passengers, a man and a woman, were arrested on the spot. The driver attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended by the patrol in the yard of a building in Meghri. Other police services came to assist the patrol. The crime scene was secured, and after the initiation of criminal proceedings, the area was inspected.
A total of 12 packages containing cannabis-like substances were found, weighing 12 kilograms 660 grams. Subsequent measures involved the personnel from the Department of Combating Illegal Drug Trafficking of the Criminal Police and the 3rd Department of the Investigative Committee's Economic Crimes and Smuggling Investigation Directorate. Evidence-gathering operations and intelligence efforts revealed who was to receive the large quantity of cannabis smuggled into Armenia. The following day, this individual was also arrested on the Yerevan-Yeraskh highway. Charges have been brought against him and the individuals arrested in Syunik. All four have been detained. The circumstances are being clarified during the preliminary investigation,” the statement says.
