The Klyuchevskaya Sopka Volcano Awakens for the First Time in 600 Years in Kamchatka

The Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano, located in eastern Kamchatka, has awakened for the first time in approximately 600 years on the morning of August 3. This information was reported by the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team.

The volcano spewed ash up to 6 kilometers high, prompting the establishment of an orange aviation hazard code for the region. The ash cloud is moving eastward towards the Pacific Ocean, and populated areas have not been affected.

The last recorded eruption of Klyuchevskaya Sopka dates back to around the mid-16th century. Since then, the volcano had been considered dormant. The resumption of activity may have been triggered by a recent strong earthquake in the Pacific Ocean.
