Moscow is Preoccupied with the War in Ukraine and Losing Its Position in the South Caucasus, Azerbaijani Media Reports
Azerbaijani media outlets (trend.az) have published an article discussing a potential diplomatic turnaround in the South Caucasus. The article notes that, according to certain sources, a meeting is scheduled to take place this week between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the possibility of resolving decades-long enmity between the two countries and establishing peace.
The article emphasizes that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has been actively working in recent months to mediate between Baku and Yerevan. It states that Washington has presented a proposal consisting of 12 points, focusing on the mutual recognition of borders and international security guarantees. The author highlights that this could become the most significant advancement for the region since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The Azerbaijani media also touches upon the diminishing influence of Russia in the region, noting that Moscow is currently preoccupied with the war in Ukraine and is losing its position in the South Caucasus. The article mentions that this situation creates an opportunity for the U.S., the EU, and Turkey to promote new processes of peace and integration.
Furthermore, the article stresses that the establishment of peace could substantially transform not only the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan but also the economic and transport architecture of the entire region. It points out that infrastructure development, particularly the activation of the Zangezur corridor, could facilitate an increase in freight transportation and investments.
The author, Elchin Alioglu, writes that for Armenia, peace could present an opportunity to overcome economic isolation and expand export markets.
