Syrian Authorities Authorize IOM to Restore Presence in the Country

Syrian authorities have authorized the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to restore its official presence in the country and expand its operations, according to a press release from the IOM.

"IOM welcomes the official confirmation from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates to restore its official presence in the country and to expand humanitarian operations in Syria," the document states.

The organization added that since 2014, it has been operating only in the northern part of the country.
"We are grateful for this support and welcome the opportunity to work closely with national partners to address urgent needs and support long-term recovery. This decision opens doors for IOM and our partners to expand assistance provided to individuals and communities affected by conflict, displacement, and climate challenges," said IOM Director General Amy Pope.

At the end of November 2024, armed groups from the Syrian opposition launched a large-scale attack against the positions of the Syrian Army and entered Damascus on December 8. Bashar al-Assad resigned from the presidency of Syria and left the country. Ahmed al-Sharaa was declared the President of Syria on January 29, leading the new administration during the transition period.
