China Refuses to Abandon Russian Oil

China has rejected U.S. demands to halt purchases of Russian oil, stating it will defend its energy sovereignty. Chinese officials have emphasized that oil purchases will be determined by the country's domestic political needs and that they are prepared to pay tariffs of up to 100 percent.

In response, the U.S. has warned that a new bill in Congress could enable tariffs of up to 500 percent on Russian oil, which would also apply to China. The U.S. has also expressed discontent regarding Russia's export of dual-use goods worth more than $15 billion.

Such actions from China could undermine its reputation in Europe, as they are perceived as support for the war. China and the U.S. have extended the trade truce for another 90 days, but it remains unclear whether Trump may impose secondary sanctions in the future.
