The Time of Neutrality is Over: Austria Plans to Join NATO

The time of neutrality is over: Austria is speaking for the first time in decades about joining NATO. In an interview with Die Welt, Austria's Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger stated that Vienna is ready to discuss abandoning its neutrality and joining NATO. The reason behind this shift is Russia's increasingly aggressive policies.

"Only neutrality will not protect us. Austria needs not only its own defense investments but also real partnerships," the minister said.

Currently, there is no majority in parliament or among citizens in favor of joining the alliance. It is noteworthy that Austria declared neutrality in 1955, following the withdrawal of Soviet and allied troops. This provision is enshrined in the constitution, but the country cooperates with NATO through the 'Partnership for Peace' program.
