7.2 Magnitude Earthquake in Eastern Russia

A tsunami threat has been declared for several localities in the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia, according to a statement from the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations.

“The maximum wave height is forecasted to be 0.29 meters in the village of Nikolskoye. In Ust-Kamchatsk, a rise of up to 0.19 meters is possible,” the agency warned.

According to preliminary data from the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center for Geophysical Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, three earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.3, 6.5, and 7.2 have occurred near the peninsula's shores.

Rescue services are advising local residents to move to higher ground and stay away from the water.
