ECtHR Sends Inquiry to Armenia Regarding Imprisoned Mother of Three Children

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has sent an inquiry to Armenia regarding the case of a mother of three children, one of whom is an eight-month-old baby in detention. This was announced by attorney Zarouhi Postanjyan, who noted that they received an official letter from the European Court of Human Rights.

"The court has sent an inquiry to the Republic of Armenia regarding the conditions of the detention of Liana Harutiunyan and her minor child at the Abovyan penitentiary facility," the lawyer reports, also providing a copy of the letter.

It should be added that Liana Hovhannisyan, the mother of three, is accused of aiding illegal migration under Article 470 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. She was questioned as a witness for nearly a year for translation work and then, as my legal colleagues would understand, she became the accused.

The case is currently at the preliminary court hearing stage. The court chose house arrest as a measure of restraint; however, since the woman lives in a rented house, the landlord refused to allow her to serve house arrest at their property. Instead, the court imposed three months of detention. Now, this woman must be transferred to a detention facility with her eight-month-old baby, as she cannot leave the child in someone else's custody.
