Azerbaijan Tightens Media Laws

On July 14, the Milli Majlis adopted amendments that strengthen control over media outlets. Foreign media organizations are now required to register in the state registry within 7 working days; otherwise, access to their websites may be restricted, and their operations could be suspended.

The requirements for news agencies have also been tightened, necessitating at least 20 partnerships with other media outlets, accredited correspondents in 5 countries, and names that meet 'moral standards.'

Violations are subject to hefty fines and removal from the registry. Experts believe this marks another step towards curtailing freedom of speech.
