Trump's Proposals for Iran
The Trump administration has discussed providing Iran with access to up to $30 billion, easing sanctions to construct an energy-producing nuclear program, and releasing billions of dollars from Iran's restricted resources, all aimed at bringing Tehran back to the negotiating table, CNN reports, citing its sources.
According to the publication, the U.S. and key players in the Middle East have been in back-channel talks with the Iranians even in the last two weeks amid a wave of military strikes in Iran and Israel. Discussions have continued following the signing of a ceasefire agreement this week.
Trump administration officials have emphasized that several proposals have been put forth. These are preliminary and evolving, featuring one consistent and non-negotiable bargaining point: a zero enrichment of uranium in Iran.
However, at least one preliminary project proposal includes several incentives for Iran. Some details were discussed during a secret, hours-long meeting last Friday at the White House among U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Gulf partners, a day before one of the U.S. military strikes against Iran.
CNN has been informed by certain Trump administration officials that among the conditions being discussed, previously unreported, is an investment of an estimated $20-30 billion in Iran's new non-enriched nuclear program, which would be used for civilian energy purposes. Other incentives include the potential lifting of certain sanctions against Iran and allowing Tehran access to $6 billion currently restricted from being freely used in overseas bank accounts.
