Military Service Regulation Change Proposal Rejected

The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Defense and Security has rejected the proposal to include the draft amendments to the Law on Military Service and the Status of Military Personnel, authored by Hayk Sargsyan, in the parliamentary agenda.

Five lawmakers voted in favor, four against, and one abstained. The committee chairman, Andranik Kocharyan, announced that the proposal did not pass and received a negative conclusion.

It is noteworthy that the proposed changes to the Law on Military Service suggest that if individuals aged 18 to 32 prefer to complete their mandatory military service in just one month, they must pay 24 million drams. If they choose to serve for four months, the payment would be 18 million drams.

Additionally, a state fee for renouncing Armenian citizenship before reaching the age of 16 is proposed to be set at 15 million drams, while the maximum age for mandatory military service is suggested to be 32 years old. The draft had received a positive conclusion from the government on May 22.
