Tensions Escalate in Los Angeles as Large Contingent of Marines Deployed
The U.S. authorities have confirmed the decision to deploy around 700 Marines in Los Angeles, in addition to the National Guard troops already sent to the area. This deployment comes against the backdrop of clashes involving immigration service workers.
Furthermore, an additional 2,000 National Guardsmen are being sent to the city. California authorities have deemed the National Guard deployment decision unlawful and have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.
In comments to AFP, a senior White House official stated that the deployment of Marines is due to an "escalation of threats against federal personnel and buildings." According to a statement from military command, the Marines will "seamlessly integrate" with the already stationed forces, which are tasked with "protecting federal personnel and property in the Los Angeles metropolitan area."
