They Will Use It Against Us: Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the cancellation of tariffs imposed by him through the courts could lead to an economic collapse in the country. He made this announcement on the social media platform Truth Social.
He highlighted that this would allow foreign countries to impose anti-American tariffs against the U.S.
Trump expressed concern that the courts could nullify the tariffs he imposed on imports from several countries. This would pave the way for foreign governments to exert economic pressure on the United States.
“If the courts somehow rule against us regarding the tariffs, it will allow other countries to hold our nation hostage with their anti-American tariffs that they will use against us,” Trump wrote.
On May 28, 2025, a federal court in the U.S. ruled that Donald Trump exceeded his authority by imposing tariffs on imports. He referenced the 1977 law, the IEEPA. However, the court indicated that the law does not permit the president to act without congressional approval.
The ruling invalidated several tariffs, including a 10% tariff on all imported goods and a 25% tariff on goods imported from China, Mexico, and Canada, which had been set by Trump’s administration as part of its trade policy.
The day after the court's ruling, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily stayed the implementation, allowing the tariffs to remain in effect pending the review of the appeal.
Trump stated that the consequences of such a ruling could be catastrophic: “This would mean the economic collapse of the United States of America.”
