Citizen Throws Axe at Doctor Responding to Emergency Call in Yerevan

On the evening of May 26, a report was received by the police from the ambulance service indicating that an emergency medical team had been dispatched to a house on Araratyan Street in Yerevan, where an unknown citizen had attacked a doctor with an axe. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“The operational group of the Shengavit community police quickly rushed to the scene. Fortunately, the incident did not result in serious consequences.

It was revealed that at 20:57, the ambulance team responded to a call regarding a patient feeling unwell at the given address. There, a 45-year-old man, apparently under the influence of alcohol, first explained to the medical staff how he had broken the bathroom in the house and then suddenly grabbed an axe from the corridor, made erratic movements, and threw it at the doctor.

At 22:55, the man was arrested and taken to the police station, subsequently being presented to the investigative department along with the prepared documents. A criminal case has been initiated, and the 45-year-old man has been transferred to a detention facility.

This is just another case in recent times where individuals responding for humanitarian purposes are confronted with overt hostility. However, the issue has both moral and criminal-legal dimensions; these are typically punishable offenses.

The police urge, but primarily demand, that individuals performing their professional duties be at least treated with respect, and that unnecessary interference or obstruction of their professional activities be avoided. If there are doubts regarding their performance, only legal, civilized measures should be taken; otherwise, the legal consequences will be unavoidable,” the statement said.
