The Straightest Path to Alleviating Azerbaijan's Fears is This: Mirzoyan
If Azerbaijan's concerns are genuine regarding claims of territorial demands made by Armenia's Constitution, then the most direct way to alleviate them is by signing a peace agreement, rather than refusing to sign it. This was stated by Armenia's Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan at a press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“After signing, this agreement must go through the ratification process in accordance with our legislation. First and foremost, we need to refer it to the Constitutional Court, which is the only authority authorized to interpret our Constitution,” Mirzoyan noted.
He added that Armenia is ready to present its arguments to Azerbaijan, listen to the Azerbaijani side, and seek a solution. “Our mission is to try to find a solution. If we can agree on new meetings at the level of ministers or prime ministers and presidents, that would be welcomed. We are open to such negotiations,” emphasized the head of Armenia's Foreign Ministry.
Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan also stated: “This is, of course, an important guarantee for creating a predictable, secure environment and building peace in the region. Armenia is committed to the peace agenda; we have a draft peace agreement coordinated with Azerbaijan and are ready to start discussions about the place and time of its signing with Azerbaijan as soon as possible.”
“Generally, shaping a peaceful and secure environment around us is one of Armenia’s foreign policy priorities. We also have dialogues with Turkey regarding the normalization of relations and are committed to constructing a completely new, peaceful, and secure region. We are taking all necessary steps in that direction and are ready to continue.”
The first glance at the map allows us to assert that the South Caucasus can play a key role in connecting Europe to Central Asia. Here too, Armenia is ready to show its initiative. We have already presented the 'Crossroads of Peace' initiative, which entails unblocking transportation infrastructure in the region.
