This Agreement Will Keep Azerbaijan from Invading Armenia: Rubio

The United States has conveyed the importance of signing a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan to Azerbaijan, emphasizing that any potential clash between the two countries would be seen as unconstructive. This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a hearing at the House Foreign Affairs Committee, addressing a call by Republican Congressman Jim Costa to halt military aid to Azerbaijan.

In response to a question regarding the Republican Party's stance on this issue, Rubio indicated that the current U.S. administration has not made a decision yet, as Washington is focused on establishing peace between Yerevan and Baku. “Right now, we are focused on getting to an agreement for a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which would keep Azerbaijan from invading neighboring Armenia. We would like to prevent that. President Donald Trump is committed to preventing wars, and in our communications with both countries, especially Azerbaijan, we have tried to emphasize that signing a peace agreement and not engaging in warfare will bring enormous benefits,” Rubio emphasized.

The Secretary of State also highlighted that, in Washington's view, such a clash between the parties would be devastating and unconstructive. “A war between them is the last thing we would want right now,” Rubio noted. Earlier, it was reported that during the same session, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the real risk of armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan remains, and Washington is trying to prevent it.
