US Reports Russia's Victory in Negotiations
The negotiations surrounding Ukrainian settlement held in Istanbul have been marked by notable tactical success for the Russian leadership. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT).
According to the newspaper, the very fact of the meeting is evidence of Vladimir Putin's strategic victory, as it took place without reaching an agreement on a ceasefire, which Ukraine and most of its Western allies insisted upon.
The paper also notes that frustration within the Trump administration has grown due to the lack of progress in peace efforts. The president had encouraged the idea of dialogue earlier in the week; however, by Thursday, his expectations had diminished, stating that no significant developments would occur without a personal meeting with the Russian leader. He expressed plans to have a phone call with Putin, and potentially arrange a personal meeting afterwards if possible.
