Zelensky Supports Trump's Plans to Visit Turkey
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to attend a meeting in Istanbul. He made this announcement on his Telegram channel.
“I have supported Donald Trump’s idea of a complete and unconditional ceasefire, lasting long enough to create a basis for diplomacy. I have supported President Trump’s idea of direct negotiations with Putin,” Zelensky stated.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that he is ready for the meeting and will be in Turkey. He added that Ukraine “would like President Trump to be with us for this meeting in Turkey.”
Earlier, President Trump had expressed a “feeling” that Russia would agree to a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. He also mentioned that he is considering the possibility of personally visiting Turkey for potential negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
On May 11, Putin suggested that Ukraine resume direct negotiations, which had been interrupted in the spring of 2022. According to him, Moscow is ready for dialogue and is awaiting a response from Kyiv and its Western partners. Zelensky initially rejected the Russian leader’s proposal, but after Trump’s statement, he said he would personally come to Istanbul and wait for Putin there.
