Significant Increase in Dust Concentration in Central Yerevan

Significant Increase in Dust Concentration in Central Yerevan

On May 11, a strong wind observed in Yerevan, with a maximum speed reaching 20 m/s, was associated with thunderstorm activity generated within a cumulonimbus cloud, formed specifically over Yerevan. These types of winds are referred to as squalls and are created due to a significant temperature and atmospheric pressure difference between the forward and rear sections of a thunderstorm cloud.

This has been reported by the Ministry of Environment’s Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center.

As a result of the strong wind, a significant increase in the concentration of indistinguishable dust in the atmospheric air was recorded in central Yerevan on May 11, reaching 0.589 mg/m³, which is 3.9 times higher than the allowable limit concentration. This figure was six times higher than that observed on the previous day, May 10.

No significant changes in dust concentration were reported at other monitoring stations throughout the capital, where recorded concentrations remained within allowable limits, presumably due to the atmospheric precipitation that followed the strong winds.
