First Flight Between Russia and Abkhazia After 30-Year Hiatus

On May 1, regular direct air communication was resumed between Russia and the Republic of Abkhazia, as reported by "RIA Novosti."

“From today, direct regular flights between Russia and Abkhazia are resuming after a 30-year hiatus, with the first flight operated by the airline “YUVT Aero” from Vnukovo airport.

Passengers on the Vnukovo-Sukhumi flight will be treated to a concert program featuring famous Russian and Abkhaz artists, dedicated to friendship and the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Upon arrival, guests will be greeted by representatives of Abkhaz culture, young people and children in national costumes,” the publication notes.

It is worth mentioning that Sukhumi airport has not operated since the war in the 1990s, which resulted in Tbilisi losing control over Abkhazia. The Abkhaz authorities have repeatedly planned to restore the airport. In October 2023, they signed a reconstruction agreement with the Russian company “Infrastructure Development.”
