EU Has Two Conditions for Membership: We Have Not Received an Application from Armenia - Marta Kos

“We have not yet received an application for EU membership from Armenia; once we do, we will discuss it.” This was stated by the EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Marta Kos, in an interview with Radio Free Europe.

Without specifying whether Brussels would approve the application upon receipt, the European diplomat emphasized that the desire expressed in Yerevan indicates how attractive the European community is today.

“What happened in the Armenian parliament shows that the EU's attractiveness is currently higher than before. For any country applying for EU membership, there are two conditions: it must be a state and located in Europe. We have not yet received an application from Armenia; once we do, we will discuss it, but as I mentioned, this shows that we are interesting to many countries,” Kos noted.

Last month, the Armenian parliament adopted a bill to start the EU membership process. Concurrently, the official Yerevan stated that although the bill aligns with the plan to deepen relations with the EU and Armenia's adopted policy of balancing its foreign relations, it is not an application for EU membership. “To submit such an application, Armenia must go through several procedures; when it does, we will consider it,” Marta Kos stated.
