Minors and Youth to Undergo Drug Testing

The government is considering the possibility of implementing voluntary drug testing for minors as part of a new strategy to combat the illegal drug trade. During a public broadcast, Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan elaborated on the purpose of this initiative.

According to the minister, there is a practice where minors regularly undergo testing, either voluntarily or mandatorily, to determine whether they have been using drugs. In alignment with international standards, minors can choose whether to undergo testing. The other approach discussed revolves around mass testing.

“Through discussions, we have decided that we should focus more on voluntary testing because the issue is very sensitive and delicate,” said the minister. If a minor who has used drugs does not show up for testing, the Minister explained, “We are considering a scheme where parents can take action and have their child undergo specific testing.”

The reason why the voluntary testing approach is considered more acceptable is because there is no widespread drug use among minors, although a noted increase does exist. “We must shape our approaches regarding minors and youth based on the principle of 'do no harm.' This is why the option of voluntary testing has been deemed acceptable. There is still time for discussions and final conclusions,” the minister stated.

Regarding the outcomes of the anti-drug campaign, Arpine Sargsyan noted that in 2024, 200 kg more drugs have been seized compared to 2023.
