Their Presence Will Not Contribute to the Security of This Region: Araqchi

Our policy in the Caucasus region is coordinated, and we constantly consult with each other. This was stated by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in an interview with Russia Today.

“Our policy in the Caucasus region is coordinated, and we constantly consult with each other. Recently we started an initiative that includes three countries on one side—Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia—and three countries on the other side—Iran, Turkey, and Russia. Meetings of that mechanism have been held, but of course, our friends in Georgia still have some doubts. I hope those doubts will be resolved in future meetings. The joint position of Iran and Russia is that the issues of this region can only be solved with the participation of the countries in the region,” he said.

According to Araqchi, the presence of foreign troops will not contribute to the security of this region. “Rather, it will be harmful. For this reason, we believe that the issues of the Caucasian countries can be resolved within the framework of the '3+3' format and bilateral consultations,” he emphasized.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also referred to the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, stating that they support the agreement and believe that its signing will usher in a new phase for the region. “Iran and Russia are pleased with the agreement on the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We hope it will be signed soon. We believe that this agreement will open a new page in the region, and that economic, political, and other ties will take a more concrete form,” the minister added.
