China Warns the US Against Repeating Mistakes of the Great Depression
China has issued a warning to the United States about not repeating the mistakes of the Great Depression. During a press conference in Washington, Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng urged the U.S. to learn lessons from history and avoid a repetition of protectionist policies that worsened the Great Depression.
“The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act is still relevant today. You cannot treat a headache by only focusing on your head. And of course, you shouldn’t prescribe medication for others when you yourself are ill. A good recipe from traditional Chinese medicine usually combines many different ingredients that enhance one another and create the best medical effect. Similarly, there is enough room on this earth for both China and the United States. We should strive for peaceful coexistence, rather than confrontational clashes, and assist each other in achieving success instead of leading ourselves into a deadlock,” he stated.
The EU has separately announced that China is against a trade war and will respond to any country that imposes tariffs against it.
