In Armenia, the Value of Victory is Understood: Simonyan

In Armenia, the value of victory is recognized, and the history of the Great Patriotic War is treated with care. This was stated by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, at the session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS held in St. Petersburg.

As noted by the Speaker, World War II left an indelible mark on the history of mankind, leading not only to devastation but also to enormous human losses and moral wounds that are still felt today.

Simonyan recalled the significant role of the Armenian people in the victory over fascism. More than half a million Armenians fought in the ranks of the Soviet Army across all fronts, from the Caucasus to Europe. “Armenian fighters demonstrated incredible bravery, shining during the defense of the Brest Fortress and Sevastopol, heroically defending Stalingrad and the North Caucasus, liberating the countries of Southeast and Central Europe, and storming Berlin as part of the Armenian national divisions. Many compatriots fought in the armies of the allied countries and participated in the anti-fascist struggle,” said the Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly.

Simonyan reminded that with the funds collected by the diaspora and the Armenian Church, tank columns and aircraft squadrons were formed, along with the acquisition of a large amount of weapons and ammunition. At the same time, nearly 300,000 Armenians never returned to their homes.

“The memory of the Great Patriotic War and the victory is part of our common history. Knowing the value of victory, Armenia treats the history of the Great Patriotic War with care. Today, more than 600 monuments dedicated to war participants are under state protection in Armenia. It is our duty to remember and honor the feats of those who gave their lives for that victory,” stated the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia.

According to the head of the Armenian Parliament, the session of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly is not only an opportunity to properly celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Victory but also to remind about the phenomenon of war, which has catastrophic consequences for humanity. In recent years, events have occurred that have changed the existing mechanisms and stereotypes of international relations.

He noted that the conflicts of recent decades have had repercussions extending beyond the immediate participants in those countries and regions.

As Simonyan emphasized, Armenia is consistently against all types of escalations and reaffirms its position on ceasing military actions, preventing attacks on the civilian population, and resolving issues through political and diplomatic means.

It should be noted that the 58th plenary session of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly is taking place in St. Petersburg on April 17-18.
