A Warring Country Cannot Become a NATO or EU Member: Merz
The prospect of Ukraine joining the European Union and NATO can only be considered after the end of the war, according to Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany's conservative coalition of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union. At the same time, he noted that the promise of Kyiv's membership in both associations remains relevant. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
“Ukraine is a large European country, but it is a warring European country. A country in a state of war cannot become a NATO or EU member,” said Merz.
In February, Hungary vetoed the launch of the first phase of negotiations regarding Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Later, diplomats from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia called on Brussels to present concrete proposals regarding the country's accession process.
