They Are a Proud People. Trump
On April 9, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a decision to raise tariffs on goods imported from China by up to 125%, stating that Beijing wants to sign a trade deal with Washington but does not know how to approach it. Trump made these remarks to reporters during an event at the White House.
“China wants to make a deal. They just don’t know how to do it. They are a proud people. President Xi is a proud man. I know him very well, but they don’t know how to approach this, but they will think of something. They are working on it now, but they want to make a deal,” Trump said during the event, a video of which was shared by Fox.
Trump added that it is possible to reach an agreement with all countries, including China. “They will be fair agreements. I want them to be fair. There will be fair agreements for everyone,” he stated.
Donald Trump also mentioned that he is willing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he respects.
Earlier on April 9, Trump announced the decision to raise tariffs on Chinese goods by up to 125%, noting that these would “take effect immediately.” Previously, Chinese authorities had raised tariffs on American goods from 34% to 84%.
Trump also announced a 90-day pause and exempted 75 countries from the imposed high tariffs in preparation for negotiations with the U.S., instead establishing a 10% tariff.
