Traffic Accident Victims in Armenia Raise Concerns, Says Andranik Kocharyan
According to statistical data, globally, an annual total of 1.2 million deaths are registered as a result of road traffic accidents. This was stated by Andranik Kocharyan, the chairman of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security, during discussions on road traffic safety in the National Assembly.
He noted that the number of pedestrian injuries reaches 50 million, and the statistics in Armenia remain alarming. “In Armenia, on average, one person becomes a victim of road traffic accidents every day, and 16 people are injured. Despite measures aimed at improving infrastructure and route management, the outcomes, as we see, are insufficient, and we have not yet managed to fully mitigate the negative consequences,” he said.
Factors contributing to accidents are diverse, including sector management and infrastructure issues, the unprecedented increase in the number of vehicles, the lack of knowledge among road participants regarding traffic rules, gaps in the education sector, insufficient efforts towards raising awareness and promoting civic responsibility among road participants, and many other factors.
“Therefore, our discussions today regarding road traffic safety will aim to highlight and document the existing problems in the sector and the work being done towards their resolution. I am confident that after hearing thoughts and suggestions on these issues, we will be able to consolidate everything and contribute to the process of creating a safer and more organized road system. In rough terms, it is very likely that as a result of these discussions, we will begin to consider the issues of having a strategy for the sector,” added Kocharyan.
