Kocharian on Fatalities Caused by Traffic Accidents
According to statistical data, approximately 1.2 million deaths are recorded annually worldwide as a result of road traffic accidents, with pedestrian casualties reaching 50 million. In Armenia, the statistics remain concerning. This was stated by Andranik Kocharian, the head of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security, during discussions in the National Assembly regarding road traffic safety.
“In Armenia, on average, one person dies every day due to road traffic accidents, and 16 are injured annually. Despite efforts to improve infrastructure and route management, the results, as we can see, are insufficient and we have yet to neutralize the negative consequences to the maximum extent,” he said.
According to Andranik Kocharian, the factors contributing to accidents are varied, including management and infrastructure issues in the sector, an unprecedented increase in the number of vehicles, lack of knowledge among traffic participants, non-compliance with traffic rules, gaps in the public education sector, inadequate efforts to raise awareness and promote civic responsibility among traffic participants, and many other factors.
