Sharp Increase in Domestic Violence in Armenia

In 2024, the cases of domestic violence in Armenia have seen a significant increase. This was announced by the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia.
As noted, there has been a sharp rise in incidents of physical and mental abuse. In 2024, 934 cases of domestic violence involving physical abuse were recorded, compared to 372 in 2023. This represents an increase of 562 cases or 151 percent. Incidents of mental abuse in 2024 amounted to 166, while in 2023, the number was only 46. This statistic has also risen by 120 cases or 261 percent.
Overall, 1,360 cases of domestic and household violence were registered in 2024, of which 1,100 (81 percent) were manifestations of physical and mental violence. A similar pattern was observed in 2023, where out of 508 cases, 418 (82 percent) were of this nature.
There has also been a rise in particularly severe cases of violence. In 2023, there were 3 cases of murder due to domestic and household violence, whereas in 2024, this number increased to 13. The cases of intentionally causing serious harm to health have also risen, from 8 to 15.
The Prosecutor's Office emphasizes the importance of cooperation among state bodies in the fight against domestic violence. According to the report, in 2024, representatives of the Prosecutor's Office continued to participate in working discussions on issues of domestic and household violence, maintaining communication between territorial divisions and the Police to ensure effective responses within specific criminal proceedings.
On January 17, 2025, a working group was formed with the participation of representatives from the Prosecutor's Office, the Investigative Committee, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to enhance the effectiveness of combating domestic violence.
In 2024, 35 prosecutors participated in training programs at the Justice Academy, focusing on working with victims of violence, prevention, and legal response.
