Why Did the Prosecutor General Come to the National Assembly Now? - Tovmasyan
Starting from the summer of 2024, it became known to the prosecution about events in which a specific individual had testified against Hovik Aghazaryan in a bribery case, claiming that such an incident occurred. Why is the Prosecutor General coming to the National Assembly now, through a motion, when Aghazaryan has already left the Civil Contract Party? This question was directed to the Prosecutor General of Armenia by independent MP Taguhi Tovmasyan during a meeting in the National Assembly.
"I assure you that I would have come to the National Assembly even if MP Hovik Aghazaryan had continued to be a member of the 'Civil Contract' party. I would have come because otherwise, it would seem that we conducted the investigation halfway and did not hold accountable all individuals in court. After today's session, the case will be sent to court, meaning the proceedings have been completed in their entirety. We are dealing with a multi-episode bribery scheme; our goal was to ensure a comprehensive investigation and to come to the National Assembly only when we were ready to send the case to court," Prosecutor General Vardapetyan responded, noting that significant work has been done during these months.
Taguhi Tovmasyan also posed another question to the prosecutor, inquiring whether the public discussion of the data from Hovik Aghazaryan's phone, which was seized by the investigative committee last year, constitutes a disclosure of pre-investigation secrecy or not. "Because the content of the phone became accessible to the ruling team during the pre-investigation phase. But you did not initiate any proceedings," said Tovmasyan. The Prosecutor General noted in response that Aghazaryan's phone was searched in connection with a completely different case and does not pertain to the motion presented today, while according to the National Assembly regulations, only the case related to today’s motion is being discussed.
