Change in Age Limit for Joining the Police Force

As part of police reforms, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has introduced a draft law to amend the "Law on Service in the Police". According to the ministry, the acceptance of this draft will remove the current upper age limit for joining the police force (individuals over the age of 35 cannot currently enlist).

As a result, citizens of Armenia who are at least 18 years old and possess proficiency in Armenian, along with suitable personal and professional characteristics, education, physical fitness, and health condition, will be eligible to serve in the police. For male candidates, the requirement to have completed mandatory military service will remain in effect.

The opportunities for civil personnel to be employed will also expand. Individuals with at least a bachelor's degree and who have completed relevant courses at the educational institution of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will be appointed as community police officers alongside police officers.

Civil personnel who complete the training will be granted at least the rank of police lieutenant. These individuals, similar to police officers who successfully pass retraining, will be considered certified, and in addition to their salary, they will also receive corresponding bonuses. Consequently, the total remuneration for roles such as being appointed to a mid-level position, receiving the rank of "Lieutenant", and achieving excellent certification will amount to approximately 500,000 AMD.

The draft solutions are based on international best practices, as well as a broad public consensus, including the opinions and suggestions of citizens.
