Europe is Starting to Realize It Cannot be 100% Dependent on America, Says Fidan

Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has announced that Europe has recently come to a clear understanding that it must stop relying 100% on the United States for its own security.

"We are now seeing certain arguments, discourses, and actions that the United States is putting on the agenda regarding the Ukrainian issue, in relation to its relations with Europe," Fidan said in an interview with TV 100. "For many years after World War II, Europeans have tied their security to the United States. There is a region of democracy and prosperity created under the security umbrella with the participation of the US. Europe does not have a normal army, so if this umbrella is removed, prosperity and democracy cannot develop in the same way."

Fidan noted that "America is now constantly talking about the possibility of removing this security umbrella, even if this is presented only as an idea."

"Europe is starting to understand that its security should not depend on the choice of the American voter. It must do something itself. Actions taken by US President Donald Trump in this regard have certainly panicked the Europeans even more. They arrived at a rational conclusion and said that from now on, they cannot be 100% dependent on America in the field of their own security," said Fidan.

According to him, Europe understands that "there is now a need to have a very close connection with America and receive its support, especially regarding the issue of Ukraine." However, he added, in the medium and long term, it is necessary to reduce dependency on America in matters of security.
