US Officially Halts 83% of USAID Programs
The administration of US President Donald Trump has officially terminated 83% of the programs of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This announcement was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on his page.
“After a six-week review, we have officially suspended 83% of US AID programs. Tens of billions of dollars have been spent on 5,200 contracts, which are now canceled, inconsistent with US interests (and in some cases even detrimental),” he wrote.
According to Rubio, the management of the remaining USAID programs (about 1,000) has been transferred to the US Department of State. In his post, the Secretary of State also thanked the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is overseen by Elon Musk, for its contribution to the implementation of these “mature, historic reforms.”
On February 26, the Trump administration announced its intention to cancel 92% of USAID and State Department foreign aid contracts, which would save about $60 billion from the federal budget. On February 3, the US administration, prompted by Musk and his agency, ceased operations of the agency.
