Canada's New Prime Minister's Statements on the US
Mark Carney has been elected as the new leader of Canada's ruling Liberal Party following a cross-party electoral process and will be the country’s next prime minister. He received 85.9% of the votes. According to data announced at the party congress, former Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland received 8% of the votes, while Karina Gould, the head of the Canadian government in the House of Commons, and Liberal MP Frank Baylis received about 3%.
“Canada will never, in any way, become part of America,” Carney stated during a speech before his supporters. He also promised that Canada will recover from the shock as one united nation. “I promise you that together we will be able to overcome this crisis,” he said. It is noteworthy that Carney has previously led the central bank and coordinated measures to overcome financial crises in North America and Great Britain.
