New Details on the Downing of Azerbaijani Aircraft
The Russian insurance company АльфаСтрахование has fully paid the aviation insurance compensation related to the downing of the Azerbaijani AZAL airline's Embraer 190 aircraft near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. This was reported to Interfax by Ilya Kabachnik, the deputy chief executive of the aviation and space insurance company.
The company is also compensating passengers for damages incurred, although the amount of compensation has not been disclosed.
The AZAL airline's Embraer aircraft, operating a flight from Baku to Grozny, crashed on December 25, 2024. The plane was heading towards Aktau after two unsuccessful attempts to land in Grozny.
It is noteworthy that there were 67 people on board (42 from Azerbaijan, 16 from Russia, 6 from Kazakhstan, and 3 from Kyrgyzstan), of whom 38 lost their lives.
According to a preliminary report published by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport regarding the accident investigation, the aircraft was damaged by "external objects" before colliding with the ground, resulting in hydraulic fluid/pressure loss. The investigation is ongoing.
