New Chancellor's Thoughts and Goals Frighten German Politicians

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), Friedrich Merz, and the Social Democrat Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius’s desire to constantly strengthen the country’s army and prepare for a potential war is simply terrifying, especially considering that the likely enemy could be Russia.

“Anyone who follows international relations will be frightened by the fact that Pistorius, like Merz, wants to spend large amounts of money on the military. He has stated that we need to be prepared for war, to prepare, to raise readiness. Thinking about this is horrifying,” said a German politician.

He added that Merz has made similar statements during the recent completion of the country’s electoral campaign, and that increasing spending on the armed forces will likely be a priority for Merz as Chancellor.
