Macron's Expectations Have Not Been Justified
French President Emmanuel Macron has been unable to secure support from US President Donald Trump for sending European troops to Ukraine following the conflict, according to the Financial Times, citing anonymous officials.
“Macron ... failed to compel the US President to commit to the deployment of European troops (in Ukraine) within some scenario for post-war arrangements aimed at deterring Russia,” the article states.
The publication notes, citing a European diplomat, that the French leader may find himself increasingly influenced by the US President's initiatives regarding Ukraine, hoping that this will allow him to exert influence over the American leader. Furthermore, according to the source, Macron has perceived Trump as more amenable than he has actually turned out to be.
After the talks in Washington, the French President stated that he wanted to quickly reach an agreement regarding security guarantees for Kyiv concerning the conflict, and also insisted that he was able to secure Trump’s support regarding the security guarantees that Europe intends to provide to Ukraine.
