Deaths Linked to Weight Loss and Diabetes Medications
In the UK, more than 80 individuals have died after using weight loss and diabetes medications such as Ozempic and Munjaro, according to data from the British Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
Out of these cases, 22 individuals used the medications solely for weight loss purposes, while 60 were being treated for type 2 diabetes. Over a three-month period, sales of the mentioned medications increased by 30%.
Doctors warn that side effects can include nausea and dehydration, as well as more severe complications such as seizures and pancreatitis. Nearly half a million Britons are already using these medications, and the number is expected to double within a year.
Ozempic was approved for sale in the UK in 2019, and Munjaro followed in 2023. Notably, Ozempic is intended for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity, and many use it to control appetite and lose weight. There have also been reports of vision loss among patients taking the medication.
Doctors urge that Ozempic and Munjaro should be used strictly under the supervision of specialists.
