Azerbaijan to File Lawsuit Against Russia Regarding AZAL Airline Crash
Kazakhstan has released a preliminary report regarding the circumstances of the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) aircraft on December 25, 2024, near Aktau Airport. The aircraft was flying from Baku to Grozny, but lost control during landing, which Azerbaijani authorities attribute to "external influence." Afterward, it flew to Kazakhstan but crashed during the landing and was completely destroyed.
Azerbaijan plans to file a lawsuit against Russia at the international court concerning the aircraft crash and has officially presented the circumstances and demands related to the downed aircraft to the Russian Federation.
As a result of the crash, 29 out of the 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board survived, having been located in the tail section of the aircraft. One of the most discussed scenarios by experts is that the aircraft's satellite navigation systems malfunctioned during its landing in Grozny, forcing it to interrupt its landing several times and turn back, and later, it was reportedly hit by a missile.
Azerbaijani authorities assert that "external influence" led to the crash of Azerbaijan Airlines' aircraft. Many commentators assert that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile system, as it was landing in the Southern Federal District, specifically in Chechnya, while repelling an attack from a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle.
